The Egyptian Minister of Industry discusses plans to increase the production of “Abu Qir Fertilizers” and localize green technology locally

Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, confirmed that the fertilizer industry is one of the basic pillars targeted by the national strategy to deepen local industrialization, as it is a major feeder for the agricultural sector and a vital source for bringing in foreign currency through exports.

At the end of his tour in the governorate, Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, accompanied by Engineer Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, inspected an industrial complex for fertilizers and chemical industries and a complex of factories for producing medical supplies, to review the production lines and manufacturing and export rates, and to follow up on the development and expansion plans of the two companies.

The Minister was accompanied during the tour by Engineer Mohamed Zadeh, Assistant Minister of Industry for Strategic Industries, Major General Ihab Amin, Head of the Industrial Control Authority, and Dr. Nermin Abu Al-Atta, Advisor to the Minister of Industry for Sustainable Development.

The Minister of Industry inspects the Abu Qir Fertilizer Complex

The minister began his tour by inspecting the industrial complex of the Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, which is built on an area of 420,000 square meters in Rasheed Line, with investments of 24 billion pounds, and a capital of 3 billion pounds.

The annual production capacity of the company's factories is about 1.8 million tons of high-quality nitrogen fertilizers, including 1,097 thousand tons of regular urea fertilizer and special urea fertilizer, and 725 thousand tons of ammonia nitrate fertilizer, in addition to the production of liquid ammonia, liquid fertilizer UAN, and new value-added products.

The percentage of the local component is 71%, while the company exports about 48% to 50% of its production annually to the markets of Europe, America, the Mediterranean region and Southeast Asia, and provides 2,392 direct job opportunities.

The Minister was received at the factory by Engineer Hani Dhahi, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director, where he inspected the company's three factories to see the production lines of ammonia, urea, nitrates, acid and special urea.

Industrial wastewater treatment

The tour included an inspection of the industrial wastewater treatment unit (ZLD), which has a design capacity of 650 cubic meters per hour, and represents one of the important environmental projects implemented by the company as part of its drive towards maximizing the use of resources and achieving environmental sustainability.

The unit contributes to the treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater, thus reducing the environmental impact and achieving economic benefit from water resources, in addition to reducing the requirements for chemicals needed to treat similar amounts of water, as well as producing ammonia sulfate as a by-product that can be used for agricultural purposes.

Engineer Hani Dhahi, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers Company, reviewed the operational technologies and modern control systems used in managing and monitoring production processes and digital transformation, and the measures taken to raise operational efficiency and productivity, in addition to the efficiency of the occupational safety and health system and environmental protection measures.

The company's diverse product portfolio of ammonia, ammonium nitrate, special urea, and regular urea was also reviewed, which covers more than 25% of the local demand for fertilizers, in addition to exporting its products abroad.

Khaled Hashem: Abu Qir Fertilizers is an ancient industrial edifice

During the visit, Engineer Khaled Hashem said that Abu Qir Fertilizers Company is considered an ancient Egyptian edifice in the production and marketing of nitrogenous and liquid fertilizers in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa, in terms of production rates, product diversity and its contribution to supporting the state’s plans to achieve food security, meet the needs of the local market, enhance exports and provide foreign exchange resources, in a way that supports the national economy.

The Minister praised the advanced production and technical capabilities he saw within the company’s factories, noting that the fertilizer industry is one of the industries targeted by the Ministry of Industry’s strategy, as it is one of the important links within the value chains linked to the agricultural and food sectors, and contributes to creating significant economic added value, providing thousands of job opportunities, and supporting productive activities.

He pointed out that the government provided great support to the fertilizer sector during the recent period, which witnessed global crises and regional geopolitical tensions that affected fertilizer production in some countries, explaining that the sector in Egypt was not affected by the surrounding crises thanks to the stability of the energy supply necessary for the production process without any interruption or reduction in quantities.

He stressed that this contributed to continuing production in the fertilizer sector, enabling factories to meet the needs of the local market and enhancing Egyptian exports.

Alexandria Governor: Supporting major industrial entities and encouraging expansion plans

For his part, Engineer Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, stressed the importance of the fertilizer industry as one of the vital industries that support the agricultural sector and food security, as well as its role in enhancing Egyptian exports and providing foreign exchange.

He pointed out that the governorate is keen to support major industrial entities and encourage development and expansion plans, while adhering to environmental and sustainability standards, thus enhancing Alexandria’s position as one of the most important industrial and production centers in Egypt.

Abu Qir Fertilizers implements a strategic vision in cooperation with McKinsey

In the same context, Engineer Hani Dhahi confirmed that the company is working to implement its long-term strategic vision in cooperation with McKinsey International, with the aim of enhancing productivity, raising the efficiency of energy use, accelerating digital transformation, reducing the carbon footprint, expanding the use of solar energy and producing new value-added products.

He pointed out the company's interest in applying the highest standards of governance, commitment and sound management of the environment, in a way that supports sustainable growth and maximizes returns to shareholders.

He pointed out that the company, thanks to its strong operational and financial capabilities and qualified human cadres, is continuing its journey towards consolidating its leadership and enhancing its contribution to supporting food security by fulfilling national obligations to provide subsidized fertilizers to the local market, in addition to achieving sustainable growth, in line with the Egyptian state’s directions to build a more competitive and sustainable economy.
